artist note 1999
In early 1999, two photographs captured the stark reality of that winter’s ferocity: one shows the immense snowfall piling up on a balcony, a deceptively serene white landscape. The other focuses on the aftermath of the avalanche in Galtür, where the absence of a once-standing house is disturbingly clear. This sense of sudden, sweeping loss shaped my creative mindset at the time.
I remember sitting in the hotel lobby with my sister, sipping tea, when the windows suddenly went dark. This was followed by a silent roar and an eerie stillness.
Amid this unsettling context, I created a drawing called “Headless.” Working with fine black liners on white paper—no sketches, just free-flowing lines that overlapped into forms—I sought to convey a raw, unfiltered reaction to the fragility of life. The piece depicts what appears to be a detached head exhaling a final breath, a ghost haunted by its own presence. In its stark monochrome simplicity, “Headless” reflects the tension of that winter, a season in which invisible, uncontrollable forces quite literally altered the landscape and left an indelible mark on my perception of impermanence.
